Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said this to an audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957 – and it is just as true today.

Observed annually on the 3rd Monday in January, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. This year the holiday will be observed on Monday, January 15 – which coincides with the actual day of Dr. King’s birth on January 15, 1929.

This day is an opportunity to ask ourselves:

What are we doing for others?

How do we support and give to our community?

We can honor Dr. King’s legacy by making a commitment to serve our community. You don’t have to serve on January 15. You can COMMIT to serve any day of the year. What matters is the commitment.

Our goal is to support lasting bonds between individuals and the larger community. Together we can create the Beloved Community that Dr. King envisioned. In Dr. King’s words, “the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.”
