Crime PreventionThe Albany Police Department understands that working to prevent criminal activity is an important component of public safety, in addition to effectively responding to crimes after they happen.

There are many ways a person can protect property from criminals. Additional lighting on the perimeter of a home can add extra protection. Motion sensor lighting is an invaluable tool for home protection at night. These lights are triggered with movement around a home, which not only startles would-be criminals but also alerts patrol officers in the area to such movement. The use of a family dog and home alarm systems can also be an added resource for home protection.

To better protect a vehicle from criminal activity, owners can use devices such as steering wheel locks, ignition kill switches, and car alarms. The biggest crime deterrent when vehicles are concerned is to keep all valuables out of the vehicle. Do not make yourself a victim.  Most criminals are opportunists. Keeping valuables out of the vehicle and out of sight will lessen the chances of a criminal stealing personal property. An experienced criminal can break into a vehicle and be gone with your property in a matter of seconds.
