Juneteenth was recognized by Council as an annual City holiday on May 3, 2021 through Resolution No. 2021-40.

The City of Albany supports a Juneteenth celebration annually in Albany and recognizes the historical significance of Juneteenth Independence Day to the United States. The City also  supports the continued nationwide celebration of Juneteenth Independence Day to provide an opportunity for the people of the United States to learn more about the past and to better understand and acknowledge the experiences that have shaped the United States and recognizes that the observance of the end of slavery is a crucial part of the history and heritage of the United States.

Juneteenth has now been incorporated into all union agreements and this update will extend the holiday to all remaining City employees, as per the Resolution.

The  annual celebration event is organized and produced by community professionals with support from the City of Albany.
