City of Albany, CA
Home MenuSan Pablo Avenue and Buchanan Street Pedestrian Improvements Project
The City is preparing construction plans for the installation of medians, pedestrian bulb outs, flashing pedestrian beacons, traffic signal improvements, and high visibility crosswalks along San Pablo Avenue. The project also includes improvements at three intersections along Buchanan Street, including safety improvements and a pocket park at the merge of Marin Avenue and Buchanan St., a pedestrian hybrid beacon (HAWK signal) at the intersection of Buchanan St. and Taylor St., and gateway improvements at Pierce and Buchanan Streets.
The City received an Active Transportation Plan grant (ATP) for the design phase of this project and through competitive selection retained the team of BKF Engineers for the development of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates for this project. The City is also using Measure BB and CDBG funds for this phase of the project. The design process stared early in 2017 and is expected to be complete in the summer/fall of 2018. The City is coordinating the development of plans with Caltrans as San Pablo Avenue is state right of way. In addition, a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) composed of key stakeholders to the project involving members or staff from the Regional Center for the Blind, Chamber of Commerce, Traffic and Safety Commission, School District, AC Transit, Albany Strollers & Rollers, and Park and Recreation Commission are guiding design development. The project team has also received feedback from the Albany Fire Department and the Albany Police Department. A series of public meetings are being scheduled in the fall of 2017.
