Foreclosure Prevention Clinic

The Social and Economic Justice Commission for the City of Albany is coordinating a foreclosure prevention workshop on Sunday July 26 from 10am-4pm at the Albany Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave, Albany. The event will be co-sponsored by two non-profit groups, the Mabuhay Alliance and the National Alliance of Filipino-American Real Estate Professionals. These groups have sponsored several successful workshops for the general public throughout California in the past year. The Mabuhay Alliance is listed by the federal HUD as a reliable resource for foreclosure prevention.

Margie Marks, Chair of the Social and Economic Justice Commission, announced that the Commission has been working since May with Albany’s Mayor Marge Atkinson and Mabuhay Alliance volunteer Audi Constance to plan the event which is expected to provide free information and counseling to up to 100 local residents and neighboring cities.

Audi Constance, financial planner, has taken a leading role in organizing the Albany workshop. Ms. Constance announced that volunteer Foreclosure/Bankruptcy Attorney Donna Echiverri will be on hand to provide legal advice. Other workshops on financial management and the foreclosure process will also be presented. Volunteer housing counselors who will work directly with workshop participants to answer questions and initiate foreclosure prevention strategies will be on hand.

Albany has been less hard hit than many other Bay Area communities. The impact is being felt however as SEJC Commissioner Brian Parsley reported at a recent Albany City Council Meeting. “There are an estimated 50 properties within the city at some risk of default or in actual default at this time” said Parsley.

“It is our hope that we can provide information that will help local Albany area residents weather the current economic storm in a way that keeps them, their families and our community healthy and prosperous”, said Council member Joanne Wile.

There will be no charge to registered participants. To register, please go to mabuhayalliance.org, call 1(888) MABUHAY, or call Audi Constance at (510) 435-6421. Any community member who is interested to learn more or concerned about default and foreclosure is welcome to visit the City of Albany website at albanyca.org for more information and a flyer about the workshop. Anyone interested in volunteering on the day of the event or contributing is also welcome to call.
