Community Conversations: Adults and Children in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Albany Mayor, Ge’Nell Gary, will host a new series of educational conversations about topics that build community and promote unity among Albany residents.

Mayor Gary speaks with four health experts about issues related to COVID-19. These medical professionals will provide updates on the new strand of viruses, updates on immunizations and vaccine distribution, help dismantle COVID-19 myths, and address the mental impact of what isolation has brought during the pandemic.

Dr. Aarthi Chary, MD 

Infectious Diseases Physician and Director of HIV/Immune Service, VA Palo Alto Health Care System 

Dr. Aarthi Chary, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, and board-certified in Infectious Diseases (ID) and Internal Medicine. She completed Internal Medicine Residency at Oregon Health Science University, then ID fellowship training at Stanford University School of Medicine, and has practiced HIV and ID medicine at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System for over 10 years. She is currently a subject matter expert and leader in COVID-19 prevention, management and policy at her hospital.  In this new era of evolving data and uncertainty, she continues to learn about – and work to educate other providers and patients on – the latest developments in COVID-19. 

Michael Cooper, M.D. 

Attending Psychiatrist at Alameda Health System 

Dr Michael Cooper is a board certified psychiatrist at Alameda Health Systems. He primarily supports the mental health needs of patients in the primary care clinics. Over the last year, working collaboratively with other members of the care team, Dr Cooper has supported many individuals and families as they navigate the new realities triggered by this pandemic. Dr Cooper attended medical school at Albert Einstein School of Medicine and his psychiatry residency at NYU. Prior to joining Alameda Health Systems he served as attending psychiatrist at Langone Health in Brooklyn. 

Grace Lee, M.D. 

Associate Chief Medical Officer for Practice Innovation at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital 

Dr. Grace Lee is Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine and Associate Chief Medical Officer for Practice Innovation at Stanford Children’s Health. In her current role, Dr. Lee primarily serves as a clinical and administrative leader for the health system focused on bridging quality, research and implementation for the organization. She previously served as the Principal Investigator (PI) on the CDC-funded Vaccine Safety Datalink project, Associate Director of the FDA-funded Mini-Sentinel Project, PI of an AHRQ-funded grant to develop a national surveillance definition for pediatric ventilator-associated events and to identify potential intervention bundles to improve quality of care, and PI of an AHRQ-funded grant to evaluate the health and economic impact of the CMS Hospital-Acquired Conditions and Value-Based Purchasing policies. Dr. Lee previously served as a member on the Institute of Medicine Committee (IOM) to Review Priorities in the National Vaccine Plan, the IOM Committee on the Ethical and Scientific Issues in Studying the Safety of Approved Drugs, AHRQ's Healthcare Safety and Quality Improvement Research Study Section and a Board Member for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), and the National Academy of Medicine Board on Population Health and Public Practice. Dr. Lee is currently a member of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a member of the COVID-19 Vaccines Workgroup, and Chair of the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Technical Subgroup. 

Dean A. Blumberg, MD 

Associate Professor; Chief, Pediatric Infectious Diseases  

Dr. Dean Blumberg is Professor and Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento. He went to UC Berkeley for his undergraduate education, Chicago Medical School, and did his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He did his fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at UCLA and stayed there on staff until moving to Sacramento in 1996. Dr. Blumberg is head of Infection Prevention at the Shriners Hospital for Children, Northern California. He has provided expert testimony at numerous California Legislative hearings and participated in several federal and international advocacy activities. He has worked on clinical trials with Ebola vaccine development in Liberia on behalf of NIAID. He is co-creator, executive producer and co-host of the Kids Considered podcast
