Join us for an informative discussion about H.R. 1242 which establishes the 400 Years of African-American History Commission to develop and carry out activities throughout the United States to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the involuntary arrival of Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia in 1619.

Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Though President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring “all persons held as slaves” free, slavery continued in Texas. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865 that the last known slaves were emancipated, thus the ending of slavery is celebrated annually on this date.
