Information sessions to learn more about Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in Albany, open to all, will be scheduled this summer and fall of 2024.

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) at-large (also known as Proportional Ranked Choice Voting (PRCV)) will be used in the upcoming November 5, 2024 General Municipal Election to elect members of the Albany City Council and Albany Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Education. With RCV, voters can rank candidates in order of preference.

To win one of the 3 City Council seats, a candidate must earn more than 1/4 of the votes.
To win one of the 2 Board of Education seats, a candidate must earn more than 1/3 of the votes. 

At the November 3, 2020 General Municipal Election, Albany Voters approved Ballot Measure BB (Ordinance No. 2020-07), establishing Ranked Choice Voting at-large (also known as PRCV) as the means of electing members of the City Council and the Board of Education. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) at-large or PRCV method was used in the 2022 General Municipal Election and successfully elected Members of the Board of Education and Members of the City Council. 
 
Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) at-large or Proportional Ranked Choice Voting (PRCV) is only used for the Albany City Council races and the AUSD Board of Education races, and does not affect the election of County, State, federal, special district officials, or the approval or rejection of ballot measures. Albany uses ranked choice voting at-large or PRCV (multi-winner race) unlike other Bay Area cities (S.F., Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro) that use ranked choice voting by district (single-winner race). Key Things to Remember:

  • Do not vote for a candidate more than once. Only one vote per candidate will be counted.
  • Do not vote for more than 1 candidate in a single rank. A ballot cannot be counted if more than 1 candidate is chosen as your 1st choice or 2nd choice or third choice.
  • You can rank up to 5 candidates  in order of preference. And you can rank as few candidates as you like as long as there is no more than 1 candidate chosen for each rank
  • Do not have more than 1 oval marked per row and per column.
